Hey Illinois—just when we were all starting to lean into spring, winter decided it wasn’t done with us just yet.
A strong cold front is blowing through the state today, and it’s about to flip our weather script in a big way. By the time the sun goes down, we’re looking at a fast and sharp drop in temperatures that’ll have us all reaching for our heaviest coats again.
So, How Cold Are We Talking?
Tonight, lows across the state will drop into the low 20s—yes, in April. Add in the wind, and it’s going to feel even colder than that. Gusts up to 30 mph will cut right through you, especially in open or rural areas.
Basically, if you’ve packed away your winter gear already… you might want to dig it back out. Just for one night, hopefully.
Gardeners, Take Note: Freeze Risk Is Real
If you’ve already planted flowers or veggies thinking spring was in full swing, this is your sign to go into plant-protection mode. Bring those potted plants inside if you can, or at least cover them up.
This kind of cold snap can do serious damage to early growth, so a little prep tonight could save you a lot of frustration tomorrow.
Pet Owners, Listen Up
If you’ve got outdoor pets, make sure they’ve got somewhere warm to curl up—or even better, bring them inside. This level of cold can be dangerous, even for animals used to being outdoors.
How to Get Through Tonight:
-
Dress in layers, and don’t forget hats and gloves if you’re heading out.
-
Keep blankets handy indoors to stay extra cozy.
-
Double-check windows and doors for drafts—you don’t want that wind sneaking in.
-
If you’re able, check on neighbors, especially anyone who might need a little extra help staying warm.
When Does It Warm Up Again?
The chill lingers a bit into Tuesday, with highs only in the upper 40s to low 50s, but things look better by midweek. Warmer, sunnier days are on the horizon—you just have to ride out this final slap of winter.
Tonight’s gonna be a shock to the system. It’s cold, it’s windy, and it’s not what we signed up for in April. But it’s also not forever.
Bundle up, take care of your plants and pets, and hang in there. Spring will be back before you know it.
