If you live in Arkansas, now is the time to prepare. A powerful storm system is set to move through the state this week, bringing damaging winds, large hail, and even the possibility of tornadoes from Wednesday night through Friday.
The National Weather Service in Little Rock is warning that conditions could get dangerous quickly, especially on Friday, when severe storms are expected to be at their worst.
If you haven’t already, take some time today to make a plan and stay weather-aware.
When Will the Storms Hit?
Wednesday, March 12 – First Round of Storms
Storms will begin developing in western and southwestern Arkansas by early evening.
- What to expect:
- Large hail (some could be as big as golf balls)
- Wind gusts over 60 mph
- Areas affected: Cities west of Little Rock, including Fort Smith, Fayetteville, and Texarkana
- What to do: Keep an eye on the weather if you’ll be out this evening, and be prepared for sudden storms.
Thursday, March 13 – A Short Break
Thursday won’t be as active, but don’t let your guard down.
- Some scattered storms are possible, but the biggest concern is what’s coming Friday.
- This is a good time to review your safety plan, charge your devices, and make sure you have an emergency kit ready.
Friday, March 14 – The Most Dangerous Day
Friday is shaping up to be the most serious storm threat, with central and northeastern Arkansas in the highest-risk areas.
- What to expect:
- Hail as big as softballs in the strongest storms
- Wind gusts over 80 mph, strong enough to knock down trees and power lines
- Tornadoes possible, especially in cities like Little Rock, Conway, and Jonesboro
- Timing: Storms will fire up in the afternoon and intensify into the evening, with a squall line forming overnight.
How to Prepare for Severe Weather
✔ Make sure you have a way to get weather alerts. Turn on emergency notifications on your phone and have a weather radio as a backup.
✔ Bring in or secure outdoor items. Patio furniture, grills, and trash cans can turn into dangerous projectiles in strong winds.
✔ Park your car in a safe place. If you can, move it into a garage or covered area to protect it from hail.
✔ Have a plan for where you’ll go if a tornado warning is issued. A basement or interior room with no windows is the safest place.
✔ Prepare for possible power outages. Have flashlights, batteries, food, water, and any necessary medications ready.
When Will the Weather Calm Down?
- Saturday, March 15 – The storms should move out, but some areas may still see gusty winds and lingering rain.
- Next week – Quieter weather returns, and temperatures will cool off.
