Winter’s Not Done Yet! Heavy Snow to Blanket California’s Sierra Through Monday

SACRAMENTO, CA – If you’re heading to the mountains this weekend, be ready for fresh powder and some tricky driving conditions. A winter storm is moving into the Sierra Nevada, bringing up to 15 inches of snow at higher elevations through Monday, March 4.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect, and the National Weather Service is warning about dangerous travel conditions, chain controls, and possible whiteout conditions in the passes.

Good news if you’re a skier or snowboarder. Bad news if you’re trying to get over the mountains without delays.

Here’s what to expect and how to prepare.

How Much Snow & When to Expect It

  • Snowfall: 6 to 15 inches above 4,500 feet
  • Timing: Snow starts Saturday night and continues through Monday afternoon
  • Wind: Gusty at times, causing low visibility in higher elevations

If you’re traveling on I-80, Highway 50, or mountain roads, expect slow travel, chain controls, and possible road closures. Plan extra time and check road conditions before heading out.

Why This Snowfall Matters

Right now, the Sierra Nevada snowpack is at 85% of its usual average—which isn’t bad, but we still need more storms to fully replenish California’s water supply.

Since the Sierra snowpack provides about 30% of California’s water, every bit of snow helps. If we don’t get enough by April 1st (the typical peak), we could be in for a drier summer.

This storm won’t completely fix things, but it’s a step in the right direction!

Driving into the Sierra? Be prepared.

Check for Chain Requirements – CHP and Caltrans may require chains or snow tires on mountain passes. Look up current conditions before you go.

Expect Slow TravelWhat should be a 3-hour drive could take much longer. Bring extra food, water, and warm clothes in case of delays.

Use QuickMap for Real-Time Updates – Check Caltrans QuickMap (quickmap.dot.ca.gov) or call 1-800-427-ROAD before leaving.

Great News for Skiers & Snowboarders!

If you’re heading to resorts like Palisades Tahoe, Northstar, or Mammoth, expect fresh powder!

Sunday and Monday should be prime days for skiing and snowboarding, with great new snow on the slopes.

Just be careful if you’re venturing into the backcountry. Heavy snowfall + strong winds = higher avalanche risk. Check conditions before going off-trail.
