Nebraska, get ready—it’s about to get painfully cold. A powerful Arctic blast is sweeping through, bringing blistering wind chills, blowing snow, and temperatures that will make stepping outside feel like a mistake.
With wind chills dropping as low as -35°F, this isn’t just the kind of cold that makes you shiver—it’s the kind that can cause frostbite in just 10 minutes. If you thought winter was bad before, you haven’t seen anything yet.
What’s Going On?
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning, which means it’s time to pay attention. Here’s why:
Blowing Snow & Treacherous Roads – The wind will whip snow around like a blender on high speed, making visibility almost zero in some areas. Roads will be icy and dangerous, so if you’re thinking about driving—think twice.
Brutal Wind Chills – The actual temperature might not seem that bad, but the wind will make it feel dangerously colder. At -35°F, even a short walk outside without proper gear could end in frostbite.
Frozen Pipes & Power Outages – This kind of cold can break things—like water pipes and power lines. If you haven’t already, make sure your pipes are insulated and that you have a backup plan if the heat goes out.
Bone-Chilling Temperatures Across Nebraska – Lincoln will barely hit 25°F during the day, and by night, it’ll plummet to 2°F. With wind chill? It’ll feel much worse. Across the state, we’re in for some of the coldest air we’ve seen this season.
How to Stay Safe (and Keep Your Toes!)
This isn’t just about staying comfortable—it’s about staying safe. Here’s what you need to do:
Stay Inside if You Can – If it’s not absolutely necessary to go out, just don’t. A quick run to the mailbox could leave you numb and miserable.
Layer Up Like a Pro – If you must go outside, wear lots of layers, plus a heavy coat, gloves, a hat, and a scarf. Make sure no skin is exposed—this cold doesn’t play.
Prepare for Power Outages – Have extra blankets, flashlights, batteries, and food that doesn’t need cooking. You don’t want to be caught without heat.
Frostbite & Hypothermia are Real – If your skin turns white or grayish, feels numb, or gets waxy, that’s frostbite. If you’re shivering uncontrollably, feeling confused, or slurring words, that’s hypothermia. Get warm ASAP.
Be Smart About Driving – If you absolutely have to drive, keep a winter survival kit in your car with blankets, food, and extra warm clothes. Also, tell someone where you’re going—just in case.
Check on Neighbors & Pets – This cold is dangerous for everyone, but especially the elderly, kids, and animals. Make sure your people (and pets!) are safe and warm.
We’ve been through tough winters before, but this one is serious. The combination of Arctic air, brutal wind chills, and blowing snow is making it downright dangerous out there.
The best thing you can do? Take it seriously. Stay warm, check on others, and if you have to go out, bundle up like your life depends on it—because it just might.
