Hey Nantucket! Winter’s making sure we remember it’s here. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect as snow starts to fall across the island tonight and sticks around through Friday morning. If you’ve got plans to head out or start your day early tomorrow, here’s what you need to know.
What’s Happening:
- Timing: Snow has already begun, and it’s expected to keep coming down throughout the night and into the morning hours. The heaviest snow is likely to hit overnight, so if you need to be out early tomorrow, you’ll want to be extra careful.
- Snowfall: Nantucket could see around 2 to 4 inches of snow, but it’s not just about the amount—it’s how quickly it’ll build up, especially on untreated surfaces. Wet, heavy snow could pile up fast if it’s not cleared right away.
- Wind & Visibility: We’re not just dealing with snow—wind gusts up to 30 MPH will blow that snow around and make it difficult to see the road ahead. Visibility is going to be low, and with gusty winds, snow drifts can form quickly.
Why You Should Pay Attention:
- Travel Conditions: If you don’t need to go anywhere tonight or early tomorrow, stay home. The roads will be slick and covered in snow, and low visibility will make it hard to drive safely. If you do have to go out, be sure to drive slowly and give yourself more time to get where you need to go.
- Slippery Walkways: Don’t forget to watch your step! Sidewalks and streets are going to be slick with snow and ice, so if you need to head outside, wear proper footwear and take it slow. You’ll want to avoid any slip-ups.
- Wind Chill: The wind’s going to make it feel much colder than the actual temperature. Even if the thermometer says it’s above freezing, those wind chills can make it feel much colder, so bundle up and be prepared to stay warm if you head out.
What You Can Do:
- Stay In If You Can: If you don’t have to be out in it, now’s a good time to snuggle up inside. The snow’s going to make the roads tricky, and the wind’s only going to make it worse. Enjoy a warm night in!
- If You Need to Go Out: If you really have to get somewhere, make sure your car is winter-ready. Snow tires are a must, and an emergency kit should always be in your car when the weather’s like this. Take it slow and be extra cautious, especially in areas where the snow’s piling up or the wind’s blowing it around.
- Bundle Up: If you need to step outside, make sure you’re dressed warmly! The wind will make it feel a lot colder than it is, so layers are key. Be sure to cover your face and hands to protect from the cold air, and keep moving to avoid frostbite in extreme conditions.
What to Expect After the Snow:
- The snow should wind down by 7 AM Friday, but icy conditions will stick around. Any snow that’s left on the roads or sidewalks will freeze overnight, so watch out for slippery spots throughout the day on Friday.
This snowstorm won’t last forever, but it’s definitely going to be a bit of a hassle tonight and tomorrow. If you don’t have to be out, it’s best to stay safe and warm inside. If you do need to get somewhere, take it slow, be careful, and make sure you’re prepared for the cold.
