If you’re in Tallahassee or anywhere in North Florida, pay close attention to the weather tonight. A powerful storm system is moving in, bringing the risk of severe thunderstorms, damaging winds, and even tornadoes as we head into the overnight hours and early Sunday morning.
The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch, meaning conditions are just right for tornadoes to form. And since this will peak while most people are sleeping, it’s crucial to have a way to get alerts in case you need to take shelter fast.
What’s Coming?
Tornado Risk: This storm has already produced tornadoes in parts of the Deep South, and conditions remain favorable for strong, long-lasting tornadoes as it moves into Florida and Georgia overnight.
Damaging Winds: Gusts up to 70 mph could bring down trees, knock out power, and even damage buildings. Power outages are likely in some areas.
Intense Thunderstorms & Heavy Rain: Expect torrential rain, loud thunder, and frequent lightning, with possible flash flooding in low-lying areas.
When Will It Hit?
- Saturday Evening: Storms will begin developing across the Gulf Coast and move east.
- Late Saturday Night (10 PM – 2 AM): The highest tornado risk will move into western Florida and southern Georgia.
- Early Sunday Morning (2 AM – 6 AM): Storms will continue east, but severe weather—including tornadoes—will still be possible.
The biggest concern? This is happening while most people are asleep. Make sure you have a way to wake up if a tornado warning is issued!
How to Stay Safe Tonight
✔ Turn On Emergency Alerts – Your phone’s emergency alerts should be ON, and if you have a NOAA weather radio, keep it close by.
✔ Know Where to Go in a Tornado – The safest place is a small, windowless room on the lowest floor, like a bathroom, closet, or hallway. Mobile home? Find a safer place to shelter.
✔ Prepare for Power Outages – Charge your phone, flashlight, and backup battery packs now in case the power goes out.
✔ Avoid Driving if Possible – If you’re caught on the road during a tornado warning, find a sturdy building to shelter in immediately. Never try to outrun a tornado in your car.
✔ Stay Informed – Follow local weather updates and check in with family and friends to make sure they’re prepared too.
What to Expect Sunday Morning
- Storms should move out by sunrise, but strong winds could stick around.
- If power is out, report it and stay away from any downed lines.
- Check for damage before heading outside—trees and debris may be blocking roads.
