South Dakota’s Spring Surprise: Storms and 20 MPH Gusts Could Ruin Your Afternoon Plans

Hey Sioux Falls — if you’ve been loving the warm start to the week, enjoy it while it lasts. Because by Thursday afternoon, we’re in for a spring weather shake-up.

It Starts Out Nice… But Don’t Get Too Comfortable

Thursday morning will feel pretty great — sunny skies, temperatures climbing into the mid-70s, and that light spring breeze we all love. But by late afternoon, things take a turn.

Clouds start building, winds start picking up, and then — boom — thunderstorms move in.

Winds Will Be No Joke

Before the storms even roll through, we’ll be dealing with breezy conditions, with gusts around 15–20 mph. Not crazy, but enough to toss your recycling bin down the street or send those lawn chairs scooting across the yard.

Pro tip: tie down anything light you’ve got outside or just pull it inside for the day.

Storms Could Pack a Punch

Thunderstorms are expected to develop across the area late Thursday. And there’s a decent shot a few could get strong to severe. The Storm Prediction Center has put us in a “slight risk” zone, which means:

  • Possible gusty winds

  • Heavy rain

  • Maybe even small hail in a few spots

You might hear some rumbles during your commute home or dinner time. It won’t last all night, but it could be intense while it’s here.

How to Stay Ahead of It

No need to panic, but definitely stay smart. Here’s how to stay a step ahead of Mother Nature:

  • Check the forecast before you head out

  • Get your yard in order — bring in the grill cover and those garden gnomes

  • Stay weather-aware — make sure you’ve got emergency alerts turned on

  • Delay travel if you can once the storms get going

Cooler and Calmer by Friday

The storms will move out pretty quickly, and Friday will bring cooler, calmer weather — highs in the low 50s and mostly clear skies. A great day to dry out and catch your breath.
