If you’re anywhere near the Eureka coastline, heads up—massive waves up to 24 feet are crashing in, and it’s not safe to be near the water.
A High Surf Advisory is in effect until 10 AM Tuesday, which means powerful waves, unpredictable surf, and dangerous conditions along the shoreline. If you were thinking about taking a peaceful beach walk or checking out the waves up close, now is not the time.
What’s Happening Right Now?
Monster Waves Hitting the Shore
- Waves between 22-24 feet are rolling in, slamming against jetties and cliffs.
- The most impacted areas include Del Norte, Northern Humboldt, and Southwestern Humboldt counties.
- The advisory started at 4 PM Monday and will remain in effect until 10 AM Tuesday.
Sneaker Waves Are a Real Threat
- These waves are unpredictable—just when the ocean seems calm, a huge wave can surge up the beach.
- Even strong swimmers won’t stand a chance if caught in the surf.
- The waves can also erode the coastline, making some trails and cliffs unstable.
What This Means for You
Stay Off the Beach and Jetties
- These waves can wash over rocks and shorelines suddenly—it’s not worth the risk.
- Beachcombing? Not a good idea. Sneaker waves can sweep people off their feet with no warning.
- Mariners, be extra careful. Small boats are at high risk in these conditions, and harbor entrances could be treacherous.
If You Live Near the Coast
- Be aware of possible beach erosion and high water levels in vulnerable areas.
- Even after the advisory expires, waves could still be rough for several hours.
How to Stay Safe
✔ Watch from a safe distance. The waves may look incredible, but no photo or video is worth risking your life.
✔ Never turn your back on the ocean. Just because it looks calm for a moment doesn’t mean it will stay that way.
✔ Keep kids and pets away from the shoreline. A single wave can knock them over and pull them out before you even realize what’s happening.
✔ Boaters, stay in port. Conditions are dangerous for small vessels, so it’s best to wait it out.
When Will It Calm Down?
- The High Surf Advisory ends at 10 AM Tuesday, but the ocean will still be rough. Even after the big waves pass, sneaker waves can remain a threat.
- The waves will start to settle, but always use caution near the water, especially in the next 24 hours.
