Dangerous Snowstorm Hitting Pocatello—Are You Ready for 7 Inches of Snow?

Hey Pocatello! Winter’s showing up big time today, and it’s bringing some serious snow. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect, and we’re expecting up to 7 inches of snow by 2 PM MST. Roads are going to get slick, visibility is going to be low, and travel could get tricky, so here’s what you need to know to stay safe.

What’s Happening:

  • Timing: The snow is already here and will continue to fall through the morning, with the heaviest snow expected until 2 PM MST. If you’re heading out, expect roads to get snow-covered quickly, and visibility to be pretty bad, especially if you’re driving in the next few hours.
  • How Much Snow?: Pocatello is looking at anywhere from 4 to 7 inches of snow, with some areas possibly getting a little more. It’s going to be a wet, heavy snow, so it’ll stick to the roads fast and make everything slippery.
  • Wind & Visibility: Along with the snow, we’re seeing winds gusting up to 25 MPH, which will blow the snow around, making visibility even worse. Drivers especially need to watch out for sudden whiteouts and the possibility of snowdrifts.

Why This Matters:

  • Roads Are Going to Be Slick: If you don’t have to go out, stay in. The snow is going to cover the roads quickly, and they’re going to be pretty slippery, so it’s best to avoid traveling unless it’s really necessary. If you do need to go somewhere, make sure you’re ready for winter driving—snow tires are a must, and slow down. Give yourself plenty of extra time and space between you and other cars, and keep an eye out for icy patches.
  • Icy Sidewalks: It’s not just the roads—sidewalks, parking lots, and driveways are going to be covered in snow too. Be careful if you have to walk anywhere. Wear boots with a good grip, take it slow, and keep your eyes open for any spots where you might slip.
  • Wind Chill: It’s going to feel much colder than it actually is with those winds. Wind chills will drop well below freezing, so if you’re heading outside, make sure you’re bundled up. Layer up, cover your hands and face, and try to limit your time outside.

What You Should Do:

  • Stay Inside If You Can: If you don’t need to be out, stay inside. The snow and wind are going to make travel difficult, so it’s safer to stay off the roads if possible. If you do have to head out, make sure your car is prepared for the weather—check your snow tires and make sure your windshield wipers are working properly.
  • Take It Slow on the Road: If you absolutely need to drive, don’t rush. Snow makes stopping harder, so slow down, keep a safe distance from other cars, and use your headlights to increase visibility. And don’t forget to keep some windshield washer fluid handy, since the snow can make your windshield dirty fast.
  • Walk Carefully: If you need to walk outside, take it slow. The snow will make things slippery, so wear boots with a good grip and take small, careful steps. Watch for any ice patches, especially in parking lots or on sidewalks.

What to Expect After 2 PM:

  • By 2 PM MST, the snow should let up, but icy conditions will stick around, especially on untreated roads. Anything that’s been left on the ground will freeze, so be extra cautious if you have to head out later in the day.

This snowstorm isn’t going to last forever, but it’s definitely going to make things difficult for the next few hours. If you can stay home, it’s the safest bet. If you do need to go out, just be extra cautious and take your time. The snow might be heavy, but we can get through it together!
