West Michigan is getting hammered by a major winter storm, and it’s making life tough for anyone planning to step outside. With heavy snow, fierce winds, and icy roads, it’s time to take this storm seriously. Here’s what’s happening and how you can stay safe.
What’s Coming Your Way
If you’re in Ottawa, Muskegon, Oceana, or Newaygo counties, brace yourself. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect until 10 a.m. Thursday and snow is piling up fast—expect anywhere from 4 to 9 inches. On top of that, strong winds (gusts up to 35 mph) are blowing snow everywhere, making it nearly impossible to see. For areas like Mecosta, Kent, Allegan, Van Buren, Berrien, and Cass counties, you’re under a Winter Weather Advisory. The snow totals will be lighter here, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe to drive. Slick roads and poor visibility are still a big problem.
Why Driving Could Be Dangerous
If you’ve got travel plans, think twice. Roads are already slick, and the blowing snow is creating near-whiteout conditions in some spots. Visibility is dropping to less than a quarter mile, which makes driving extremely dangerous. If you have to go out, make sure your car is ready for emergencies—keep blankets, water, a flashlight, and a fully charged phone with you.
What You Can Do to Prepare
The safest place to be right now is indoors. Stock up on essentials like food, water, and batteries in case the power goes out. Keep an eye on weather updates, and don’t ignore warnings from local officials. If you’ve got neighbors who might need help—especially the elderly or anyone living alone—check in on them. A little kindness can go a long way during storms like this.

Stay Safe and Stay Warm!
This storm is no joke. Whether you’re dealing with heavy snow, icy roads, or strong winds, your safety should come first. Stay home, be cautious, and keep your loved ones close. Together, we can ride this out!
