If you thought this winter was already cold, think again. An intense Arctic blast is set to slam into northwest Minnesota, bringing some of the most dangerous, bone-chilling temperatures of the season. The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Watch from Sunday evening through Tuesday noon, warning that wind chills could plummet as low as -50°F to -60°F—yes, you read that right.
This Is More Than Just Cold—It’s Dangerous
We’re not talking about just another winter chill. This kind of cold can be life-threatening if you’re not prepared.
- Frostbite Can Happen in Minutes – If you have even a little bit of skin exposed, it could freeze in as little as five minutes. That means even a quick trip outside—grabbing the mail, walking the dog, or running to your car—could be risky.
- Travel Could Be Deadly – If your car breaks down in these temperatures, being stranded is extremely dangerous. Battery failures, frozen fuel lines, and icy roads will make driving risky, especially along US Highway 2 and MN Highway 220.
- Your Home Will Feel It Too – Pipes can freeze, heating systems will be pushed to their limits, and power outages are a possibility. If you haven’t prepped your home yet, now is the time.
How to Stay Safe
Stay Indoors as Much as Possible – If you don’t have to go outside, don’t. If you do, dress in layers and make sure every inch of skin is covered.
Prepare Your Car for Emergencies – Keep extra blankets, warm clothes, non-perishable food, and a fully charged phone in case you get stuck. A full tank of gas is a must.
Protect Your Home – Let faucets drip to prevent frozen pipes, stock up on food and supplies, and check your heating system.
Check on Others – If you have elderly neighbors, family members, or outdoor pets, make sure they are safe and warm.
This isn’t just a typical winter cold snap—it’s extreme, it’s dangerous, and it’s nothing to take lightly. Stay safe, stay warm, and don’t take unnecessary risks. Minnesota, we’ve seen cold before, but this one’s going to be brutal!
