Columbia County students saw increased security during the school day as law enforcement investigated a threat against county schools posted on the social media platform Snapchat.
On Friday, March 1, three of Columbia County’s four school districts — Scappoose School District, Rainier School District and Clatskanie School District — notified community members of a nonspecific threat made against county schools. According to each of the releases, Columbia County Sheriff’s Office contacted each of the districts early Friday morning to inform school officials of the threat, which CCSO did not believe to be credible.
By the end of the day, all three districts had issued follow-ups stating that the threat had been resolved.
Out of an abundance of caution, law enforcement presence was increased at schools in all three districts. The districts reported that the school day would continue as usual, except for at Clatskanie Middle/High School, which closed its campus during lunch.
According to a release from Scappoose School District, the threat was posted on Snapchat and was not aimed at any particular school or school district. The post included a generalized threat and an image of a weapon. According to Clatskanie School District, the threat may have originated from somewhere in northern Columbia County.
